Paul Merson has tipped Chelsea FC to blow the top-four race “wide open” with a win against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

The west London side are in fifth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of Spurs, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

Tottenham are in a rich vein of form with five victories and one stalemate in their last six Premier League fixtures to cement their top-four challenge.

Chelsea FC, on the other hand, have lost four of their last six top-flight outings to heap pressure on their Italian head coach Antonio Conte.

However, Spurs have a miserable record at Stamford Bridge and haven’t won a game in west London since a 2-1 victory back in February 1990.

Chelsea FC will move to within two points of Tottenham if the defending Premier League champions manage to maintain their excellent record against Spurs.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Chelsea FC will beat Spurs to give Conte’s side the momentum in the final months of the season.

“This is a massive football match,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It either opens up the top four or closes it and it’ll be finished but I’m going to go for it to be blown wide open because I fancy Chelsea to win this game.

“I don’t see how Tottenham win without Harry Kane but in a must-win game, Spurs have to go there and make sure they don’t lose.”

Chelsea FC were 2-1 winners against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the second Premier League fixture of the 2017-18 season thanks to Marcos Alonso’s double at the home of English football.
