The Merseyside outfit head into the game looking to claim a famous win over Jose Mourinho’s men and take a step closer towards finishing in the top four this season.
The Reds are currently in third place in the table but they know that victory over the Red Devils at Old Trafford would lift them above Manchester United and into second place with eight games left to play.
Liverpool FC warmed up for the crunch clash against Manchester United by claiming their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a goalless draw against FC Porto on Tuesday night.
Manchester United, meanwhile, came from two goals down to claim a thrilling 3-2 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on Monday night.
Thompson is tipping the two sides to play out a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford and is backing Sadio Mane to score first in the clash.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: “My big thing in this game is that I think there will be a red card, which could decide which way it goes.
“I don’t think Mourinho will want to open up because he knows a draw isn’t the worst thing.
“However, when you’ve got players like Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba going chasing after the ball and showing a lack of positional discipline, it is difficult for him to make the team play in such a structured way.”
A footnote added: “Thommo predicts: 2-2 and Mane to score first.”
Liverpool FC are aiming to better their fourth placed finish in the Premier League from last season.
