The Reds have been in fine form in recent weeks and they are continuing to make progress under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
The German manager guided the Merseyside outfit to Champions League qualification last season as the Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table.
Liverpool FC have been one of the Premier League’s most exciting teams to watch this season and the Reds look firmly on course for another top-four finish this time around.
Former Arsenal star Merson feels that the Merseyside outfit are continuing to make progress, and that they could well be in line for a second-placed finish behind imminent champions Manchester City this season.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Liverpool could still end up without a trophy this season but you can’t argue they’re not making progress.
“If they can finish second in the table and get to the semi-finals or final of the Champions League that’s a major improvement.
“Manchester City have been so good this season it’s making everyone else look bad, but Liverpool should not be too worried.”
Liverpool FC will return to Champions League action on Tuesday night when they host FC Porto in the return leg of their Champions League last 16 clash at Anfield.
The Reds, who finished fourth last term, won the first leg 5-0 in Portugal last month to all but secure their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
