Robbie Savage insists Eric Bailly still isn’t a great defender despite naming the Ivorian as Manchester United’s best centre-half.

The Red Devils signed the African star in a £30m deal from La Liga side Villarreal in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Bailly proved an instant hit with the Manchester United supporters but suffered a serious knee problem in a 4-0 loss to Chelsea FC back in October.

The Manchester United star has struggled with fitness problems over the past 20 months at the 20-time English champions.

Bailly has been in and out of Jose Mourinho’s team throughout the 2017-18 season due to a string of injury setbacks.

The Ivory Coast international produced a man of the match performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool FC last weekend.

Former Leicester star Savage believes Bailly still has improvements to make before the Manchester United star can be considered a top defender.

“He is not a great centre-half but he is Manchester United’s best centre-half,” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup in their first season under the management of Mourinho.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at Old Trafford last week before beating Brighton to reach the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.
