The England international has struggled to nail down a regular spot in Manchester United team under Mourinho since the Portuguese coach’s appointment.
Mourinho hasn’t been afraid to criticise the Manchester United defender for his subdued performances over the past 20 months or so.
The former Chelsea FC and Inter Milan manager has criticised Shaw’s mentality in training and has even taken credit for some of his better performances.
Mourinho’s latest criticism of Shaw came after Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup after Shaw was with withdrawn at half-time at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a potential exit at the end of the season amid apparent interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Former Liverpool FC striker Fowler admitted that he felt compelled to speak out against Mourinho following his incessant criticism of Shaw.
“The way he singled out Luke Shaw, it was shocking,” Fowler wrote in his Daily Mirror column. “All the players must be steaming… apart from Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku, who were praised.
“They will be cursing Mourinho themselves, because they’ll get some stick from the rest of the lads!
“I don’t think I could ever accept an accusation that I didn’t have bottle or character. It is a given you must have that to get to the top level, to play at Old Trafford in the first place.
“Shaw, for his part, will be gutted. And the players will think that’s unfair.
“Maybe Mourinho wants to sell him, wants to force him into submitting a transfer request. Again, that’s a dangerous game because it can turn the attitude of the rest of the squad.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 16 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 earlier this month.
Manchester United can still finish the season with some silverware but the Red Devils need to beat Tottenham Hotspur to reach the FA Cup final.
