Matt Upson has urged Luke Shaw to leave Manchester United and reboot his Premier League career elsewhere.

Manchester United signed Shaw in a £27m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window under Louis van Gaal.

The England international was regarded as one of the Premier League’s best left-backs after breaking through at Southampton.

Shaw was the most expensive teenager in the world before Manchester United signed Anthony Martial in a £36m deal from Monaco in 2015.

The 22-year-old has found his first-team opportunities limited under Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese coach’s appointment.

Mourinho has openly criticised the former Southampton defender for his poor performances in the Manchester United team.

Former Arsenal star Upson believes Shaw needs to leave Manchester United to kickstart his ailing top-flight career.

“It is clear he is a player who won’t feature under Mourinho,” Upson told Sky Sports. “It is time for him to go and start his career again.”

Shaw has made 62 appearances in all competitions over the past three seasons at Manchester United.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and won the League Cup and the Europa League last term.
