The Red Devils has been critical of his players in recent weeks following Manchester United’s disappointment in the Champions League earlier this month.
Manchester United suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Spanish side Sevilla in the round of 16 to miss out on a place in the quarter-final draw.
The 20-time English champions can still win some silverware this term if Manchester United ease past Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup last four next month.
The Red Devils were 2-0 winners against Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals but Mourinho criticised most of his Manchester United players despite their win.
Indeed, his summer signings Lukaku and Matic were the only two players to receive some rare praise from Mourinho following the FA Cup win.
Former Liverpool FC striker Fowler believes Mourinho’s praise is part of bigger plan to get more transfer funds from the Red Devils hierarchy in the summer.
“The only two players he singled out for praise, Matic and Lukaku, were the two he insisted United bought,” Fowler told the Daily Mirror.
“So I suspect he’s demanding the Old Trafford board back him in the transfer market. But it’s a hell of a risky game, because he may not be around long enough to prove it if those players he’s hacked off truly turn against him.”
Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table.
