The veteran English midfielder has been used in a left-back role since Jose Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford from Louis van Gaal in 2016.
The Portuguese head coach has preferred Young’s consistency and experience in the full-back position over promising England international Luke Shaw.
The long-serving Manchester United star impressed during their 2-1 win over Liverpool FC at Old Trafford last weekend after he managed to keep Mohamed Salah quiet.
Young was powerless to prevent the Red Devils from succumbing to a 2-1 loss to Spanish side Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes, who played alongside the former England international at Old Trafford, was full of praise of Young given his composed performances this term.
“He’s done really well and kept Luke Shaw out, who we all thought was going to be the next best thing at left-back,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“He was always a good defender Ashley, [even] when playing as a wide player. We all know he’s got the quality to go forwards but this is where he has been at his best – defending.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and four points ahead of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils will take on Brighton and Hove Albion in their FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup last term.
