Craig Burley believes that Ander Herrera is an important player in the Manchester United squad and has urged Jose Mourinho to keep hold of the Spanish midfielder.

The Spanish midfielder has been struggling with an injury in recent games and he has not featured since the first leg of their Champions League tie against Sevilla back in February.

Herrera is on his way back towards full fitness and he will be hoping to feature for the Red Devils when they return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home clash against Swansea City.

There have been suggestions that Herrera could be viewed as surplus to requirements at Manchester United this summer and could therefore be sold by the Red Devils.

However, Burley believes that the Spaniard is an important squad player and is urging the Red Devils to keep hold of him for next season.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Burley said: “You need a squad player. You need players who are invested in what you are doing.

“Herrera isn’t the greatest-ever player for Manchester United but you need him in your squad.”

Manchester United are currently preparing to return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Swansea City.

The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table as they look to finish as runners-up to Manchester City and also secure the FA Cup title this term.
