The Red Devils struggled to find their form against the Spanish side as they were dumped out of Europe’s elite club competition following a shock result at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were the heavy favourites to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League but they struggled to find their form agains the La Liga outfit.
And it was the Spanish side who ended up progressing to the last eight after two late goals proved too much for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Gerrard was clearly not impressed by what he saw from the Red Devils players, especially after they had been so impressive in the win over the Reds at Anfield last weekend in the Premier League.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “I don’t think Mourinho’s players have turned up for him tonight.
“I don’t think they have shown any kind of urgency that is needed to go into the last eight of the Champions League.”
Manchester United will now dust themselves down as they prepare for their FA Cup quarter-final clash against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The FA Cup now remains as Manchester United’s last remaining hope of winning a trophy in Mourinho’s second season in charge at Old Trafford.
