The France international has struggled in recent months to prompt Jose Mourinho to drop the club record signing from his first team.
Mourinho and Pogba reportedly share a tense relationship following the Portuguese head coach’s criticism of the 25-year-old midfielder.
The former Juventus midfielder made a superb start to the season following two goals and two assists in his opening four games before Pogba suffered an injury setback.
The Manchester United star has struggled to replicate his early season form since his return to the Red Devils team.
Pogba has also been criticised for his failure to carry out his defensive duties when paired with summer signing Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park.
The £89m signing scored one goal and made an assist in France’s 3-1 win over Russia in an international friendly last week.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t expect Mourinho to name Pogba in his starting XI for the visit of Swansea City.
“For me, Paul Pogba has to play where he plays for his country which is further forward because he’s not a holding midfield player,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think he’s disciplined enough for that job and he wants to get on the ball and make things happen, but I think there is a bit of a risk there now.
“I’d be shocked if he played, if I’m honest.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term but the Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup.
