Manchester United and Manchester City are set to compete for Jerome Boateng’s signature this summer, according to a report in England.

The Sun is reporting that the Red Devils are interested in signing the £50m-rated defender from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The same article states that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is also interested in the Germany international having worked with Boateng at Bayern.

The World Cup winner was part of Guardiola’s team that won three Bundesliga titles and two German Cups before the Spanish coach took over the reins of Manchester City.

Former Hamburg centre-half Boateng spent one season at Manchester City before his move to Bayern Munich in 2011.

The German defender made 24 appearances in all competitions but struggled to find consistency in the Premier League.

According to the story in The Sun, La Liga duo FC Barcelona and Real Madrid would also consider a move for the Bayern centre-half this summer.

Manchester United signed Victor Lindelof in a £30m deal from Benfica last summer but the Sweden international has struggled at Old Trafford.

Boateng would find more quality competition for a starting spot at Manchester City in the shape of Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.
