The France international has been touted as a target for the Red Devils in the past as Jose Mourinho considers bolstering his rearguard options at Old Trafford.
Mourinho was the man who brought Varane to Real Madrid when he was in charge at the Bernabeu and the Portuguese coach is said to be a big fan of the 24-year-old defender.
Manchester United were through to be interested in signing him last summer but a move failed to materialise as the Red Devils ended up landing Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
Now, the defender has admitted that there was interested from Manchester United in his services.
Asked about contact from Mourinho, Varane told El Larguero, as quoted by the Sun: “No, not directly. There were contacts, but not directly.”
Manchester United could well be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window as Mourinho looks to assemble a team capable of challenging Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League next season.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge.
