Manchester United will look to capitalise on Samuel Umtiti’s breakdown in negotiations with FC Barcelona over a new contract, according to a report in Spain.

Spanish media outlet Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mail, is reporting that 24-year-old wants to be in the same pay bracket as FC Barcelona stars Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez.

However, FC Barcelona are reluctant to hand Umtiti a huge contract given the La Liga leaders are confident of landing Antoine Griezmann from rivals Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

The same article states that the France international looks set to move to Manchester United in the summer to bolster Jose Mourinho’s defensive options.

The Red Devils boss has signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof since his appointment in 2016 but the Ivory Coast international has struggled with injuries and the Sweden international has lacked confidence.

According to the same story, Manchester United are prepared to hand Umtiti a €9million (£7.8m) per-year contract.

The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table but 16 points adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Spanish outfit Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 earlier this month.
