Manchester United are eager to sign Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos for two key reasons, according to a report in Spain.

Don Balon, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on the Germany international ahead of the 2017 summer transfer window.

The same article states that Mourinho wants to bolster his midfield with a quality addition given Paul Pogba’s well-documented struggles in the current campaign.

The France international has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks following a number of disappointing performances in the middle of the park alongside summer signing Nemanja Matic.

According to the same story, Mourinho believes the 28-year-old would be capable of helping Manchester United to close the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City in the 2018-19 campaign.

Manchester United could be left lightweight in the middle of the park next term with former England international Michael Carrick set to retire at the end of the season.

The Red Devils signed Chile international Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal from Arsenal in the January transfer window but the South American has struggled to have an impact at Old Trafford so far.
