Nemanja Matic has called on his Manchester United team-mates to show their character when they take on Liverpool FC in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Serbian midfielder ended up being the hero for Jose Mourinho’s men on Monday night when he scored the all-important winner in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 comeback against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

That win lifted Manchester United back above Liverpool FC and into second place in the table as the race for the top spots in the top flight hots up.

Liverpool FC head into Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford knowing that the victory would lift them up into second place and above Manchester United with eight games left to play this season.

And Matic believes that the Red Devils will have to show the same character that they showed on Monday night against Palace when they come up against Jurgen Klopp’s side this weekend.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Matic said: “It is obviously great to win game by game and when you have a match against Liverpool coming up, a big derby, it is important to go into that with a win.

“We will show the same character as we did on Monday, but we have to be honest: we have to play better, especially when you see our first half performance.

“We have to do more if we want to win as Liverpool is a team with great quality and we have to do more. We have to play better, but with the same character.”

Manchester United are aiming to finish as close to Manchester City as possible this season after they ended up in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.

The Red Devils did win both the Europa League and Champions League last season, however.
