Paul Merson has demanded that Arsenal tie down Jack Wilshere to a new contract.

The England international is facing an uncertain future at the north London club following protracted negotiations with Arsenal.

The Gunners star is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign after failing to agree a new deal.

Wilshere has been linked with a potential move to Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Liverpool and Championship winners Wolves.

The 26-year-old spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Bourmemouth before he returned to the north London side last summer.

Arsene Wenger informed Wilshere that he was surplus to requirements but the tenacious midfielder opted to stay and fight for his place.

The England star has fought his way back into the Arsenal starting XI thanks to his performances in the Europa League and the League Cup.

Former Arsenal star Merson is desperate to see Wilshere remain at the Emirates Stadium beyond the summer transfer window.

“He is your best midfield players by a million miles,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Who do Aubameyang, Lacazette and Ozil want on the ball? He plays on their wavelength.”

Arsenal managed to tie down World Cup winner Mesut Ozil to a new long-term contract back in February.
