Emmanuel Petit sends warning to Patrick Vieira about becoming Arsenal manager
The Arsenal legend warns Patrick Vieira about replacing Arsene Wenger at the north London side
Emmanuel Petit has warned Patrick Vieira that it will be a difficult assignment to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
The Gunners boss has announced that he will call time on his Arsenal career at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Wenger has spent 22 seasons at the north London club resulting in three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup crowns.
However, Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Vieira helped to inspire the Gunners to title glory.
The Gunners haven’t reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010 and Arsenal missed out on qualification last term.
Vieira has been touted as a potential replacement for Wenger given his experience coaching at Manchester City.
The France legend is currently in charge of Major League Soccer outfit New York City FC.
Former Arsenal star Petit would love to see Vieira replace Wenger but warned his old team-mate that the job will be very difficult.
“So if Arsenal decided to bring back Patrick, that would be a very good idea. But following Arsene is a huge task. Whoever comes in, it won’t be easy – they will be expected to return the club to the top of the league. The club has a big decision to make,” Petit told Paddy Power.
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February.
The Gunners signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Arsenal will take on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals next week.
