Ray Parlour names which Arsenal legend should replace Arsene Wenger
The Arsenal legend wants to see Patrick Vieira replace Arsene Wenger
Ray Parlour believes Patrick Vieira would be an easier sell to Arsenal supporters than Mikel Arteta as the next manager.
The Gunners boss has announced that he will stand down at the end of the 2017-18 season following a difficult campaign.
Arsenal are in sixth spot in the Premier League table and exited the FA Cup at the third-round stage this term.
The Gunners boss can still secure Champions League football next season for his replacement if Arsenal win the Europa League trophy.
Arteta, Thierry Henry and Vieira have all been linked with the soon-to-be vacant Arsenal role, while big-name coaches such as Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique and Thomas Tuchel have been touted as potential replacements.
Former Arsenal star Parlour issued his backing for Vieira to take over the reins of the north London club.
“He was skipper of the club,” Parlour told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“The biggest compliment I can play Patrick is that he was always there during the big games.
“He was one of those guys that demanded so much out of each of his team-mates as a central midfielder.
“Tony Adams was such a great skipper but we always wondered who was going to take over when he retired.
“Patrick stepped up, took the armband and grew into the stature of the club as well.”
Vieira was part of the last Arsenal team to win the Premier League title after he captained the Gunners to an unbeaten campaign.
The World Cup winner worked as a coach at Manchester City before he took charge of Major League Soccer outfit New York City FC.
Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons under Wenger.
