Paul Merson claims Arsenal don’t have ‘top-dollar players’
The Arsenal legend doesn't believe the Gunners have enough quality players
Paul Merson believes the Arsenal supporters are right to be disgruntled given the lack of “top-dollar players” in the Gunners team.
Arsene Wenger’s side lost 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park last weekend to continue their disappointing form on the road this season.
The Gunners have only managed to win three of their 16 away games to undermine their impressive form at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have seen their home attendances dwindle in recent months following the north London outfit’s disappointing performances.
Wenger’s men are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with five games to play.
The Gunners can still qualify for the Champions League if Arsenal manage to win the Europa League for the first time in their history.
However, Arsenal have been pitted against the strongest team left in the competitions after the Gunners’ reward for beating CSKA Moscow in the last eight was a semi-final meeting with Atletico Madrid.
Former Arsenal star Merson believes the Gunners supporters are staying away due to the lack of quality on the pitch.
“Did you watch the first-half of the game against Stoke in their last home game? That’s the reason why [fans are staying away]!” Merson told Sky Sports.
“The performances just haven’t been good enough. The fans are paying top dollar and they haven’t got top-dollar players on the pitch. Too many of them are nowhere near good enough to play for Arsenal Football Club.”
Arsenal lost 2-1 to FC Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final in Paris after Galatasaray beat the Gunners on penalties in the Uefa Cup final in 2000.
