Shkodran Mustafi has expressed his gratitude to Arsene Wenger after he announced that he would be stepping down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season.

The Frenchman confirmed on Friday last week that he would be calling an end to his 22-year spell at The Emirates at the end of the current campaign amid mounting pressure on him in recent seasons.

Wenger will be hoping to steer Arsenal to Europa League glory this season as the Gunners look to secure their place in the Champions League for next season.

The Gunners will take on Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash at The Emirates on Thursday night as they look to take a step towards the final.

Arsenal have been criticised for their failure to challenge for the Premier League title in recent seasons, and Wenger has decided to step aside to let another manager take charge.

And Gunners defender Mustafi has admitted that he will always be grateful to Wenger for the impact he has had on his career.

Speaking to German publication Kicker, Mustafi said: “Arsene Wenger has achieved an unbelievable amount with Arsenal, the club is incredibly grateful.

“Twenty-two years – nowadays in football that’s pretty much unique. An era is ending.

“I’m extremely grateful that he has believed in me and wanted to bring me here.

“We obviously want to give him the farewell he deserves. Best case scenario: that will include a trophy.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to Old Trafford to take on arch rivals Manchester United.
