Paul Merson has told Arsenal that their Europa League hopes rest on them avoiding Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the competition.

The Gunners are taking the competition seriously due to their stuttering form in the Premier League this term.

Arsene Wenger’s men are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table and so their best hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League will be to win the Europa League this term.

Arsenal are looking to book their place in the semi-finals of Europe’s second tier club competition when they take on CSKA Moscow in the return leg of their quarter-final clash on Thursday night.

The north London side sealed a 4-1 win in the first leg at The Emirates last week to take a big step towards reaching the semi-finals.

Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig are among the big teams left in the Europa League this season, and Merson feels that the Gunners will have a chance of winning the competition if they are able to avoid Diego Simeone’s men in the next round.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “Fingers crossed they miss Atletico.

“If they miss Atletico, in a one off game [in the final], they have every chance. Over two legs, they will find it difficult.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Newcastle in the top flight.
