Arsenal handed Diego Costa news ahead of Atletico Madrid clash
Diego Simeone says Diego Costa is set to miss Atletico Madrid's trip to Arsenal on Thursday night
Arsenal have been handed a major boost ahead of their crunch Europa League clash with Atletico Madrid after it was confirmed that Diego Costa will miss the game due to injury.
Costa had been one of Arsenal’s chief tormentors during his time at Chelsea FC and regularly scored against the north London side.
The Spain international is now back at Atletico Madrid but he is currently struggling with a hamstring injury picked up during Atletico’s quarter-final clash with Sporting Lisbon on 12 April.
And Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has revealed that Costa is unlikely to be fit for Thursday’s first leg, although he does harbour hope of him being ready for the return clash in Spain.
Simeone is quoted as saying by Metro: “The doctors will inform us but I think it won’t be possible for him to be ready for Thursday’s game.
“He will be [available] for sure in the return leg, but I think he has no chance to be [fit] for the first leg game.”
Arsenal head into the crunch clash after their 4-1 win over West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
It was the Gunners’ first game since Arsene Wenger confirmed that he would be stepping down at the end of the season after 22 years at the club.
The north London side are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table, so their best hope of qualifying for the Champions League will be to win the Europa League this term.
