Alexis Sanchez has revealed that he sent Arsene Wenger a text message tribute after learning that he would be stepping down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season.

Wenger has decided to call time on his glittering spell at The Emirates and will step down after almost 22 years in charge at the end of the season.

The news was made public on Friday morning and it has left Arsenal seeking a new manager ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Wenger signed Sanchez for Arsenal from FC Barcelona in the summer of 2014 and he went on to help the Gunners win two FA Cup titles before his move to Manchester United in the January transfer window of this year.

And the 29-year-old Chile international has revealed that he is full of respect for the French manager after he chose to step down as Gunners boss.

Speaking to Metro after Manchester United’s win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday, Sanches said: “I texted him yesterday [Friday] to wish him the best.

“I could not say anything on social media, but I texted him and he replied to me saying thank you to me.

“It is sad because he is a historical football legend.

“I always said he is a gentleman and a football master. He taught me a lot about respect and to be professional. I’m just so thankful to him.”

Arsenal are still hoping to book their place in the Champions League for next season by winning the Europa League this time around.

The Gunners are currently preparing for their crunch home clash against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final on Thursday night.
