Arsenal could be set to secure the signing of young Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the talented 18-year-old in recent weeks and could be set to make a move to try and bring him to The Emirates.

However, the same report says that Arsenal are aware that his asking price may already be above what they would be willing to pay for the young defender.

Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer as Arsene Wenger looks to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the title next season.

The teenager has been in good form for Ajax so far this season, scoring three goals and making one assist in 27 league games for the Dutch side.

Arsenal are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the Gunners look to significantly bolster their squad this summer.

The north London side are aiming to get back into the Champions League for next season and will take on CSKA Moscow in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday.
