Ian Wright believes Antonio Conte would be a great appointment if Arsenal back the Italian in the transfer market.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a new manager after Arsene Wenger confirmed that he will stand down at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Arsenal have regressed under the French head coach after Wenger’s side finished outside the top four for the first time under Wenger.

The north London outfit are facing the prospect of another season without Champions League football following a poor campaign.

Conte led Chelsea FC to Premier League title glory in 2016-17 season after the Blues finished seven points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian head coach has struggled to lead Chelsea FC to the successful defence of their title after finishing behind Manchester City.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Conte would need backing in the transfer market to prove a success at the Gunners.

“I could see him [Conte] being brilliant. He would be fantastic,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“If Arsenal could give him what he wanted, he is someone who has a point to prove.

“We know he can win the Premier League but he wants to prove himself in the Champions League.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira helped the Gunners finish the campaign unbeaten.

The north London side haven’t reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010 to highlight their regression under Wenger.
