Ian Wright believes Arsenal need to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window in the same mould as Gunners legend Gilberto Silva.

The Gunners have struggled in the Premier League this season following their well-documented struggles at the back.

Arsenal have conceded 41 times in 31 games in the Premier League this term to highlight their weakness in defence.

Switzerland international Granit Xhaka has struggled to shine in the Arsenal team despite being signed in a £33m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window.

The defensive midfielder has shown a lack of discipline in the Arsenal team to prompt criticism of the former Borussia Monchengladbach star.

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since Arsene Wenger was able to call upon Gilberto to shield his back four.

Former Gunners striker Wright believes Arsenal desperately need a competent holding midfielder.

“For the last five or six years, Arsenal needed to find a defensive midfielder of the calibre of Gilberto,” Wright told Sky Sports.

“It hasn’t happened. It isn’t that they’re not trying to do it, they just haven’t found one of Gilberto’s quality.”

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a place in the Champions League.

The Gunners signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The north London outfit can still qualify for next season’s Champions League if Arsenal win the Europa League at the end of the campaign.
