Paul Merson is confident Arsenal will beat West Ham United to cement sixth position at The Emirates on Sunday evening.

The Gunners are in sixth spot and two points ahead of Burnley after Sean Dyche’s side missed out on the chance to overhaul Arsenal following a 2-0 loss to Chelsea FC at Turf Moor.

League Cup finalists Arsenal lost 2-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Premier League last weekend to suffer their sixth defeat on the road in the English top flight in the 2017-18 campaign.

Arsene Wenger’s side will take on La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals next week with a place in next season’s Champions League up for grabs for the competition’s winner.

Former Arsenal star Merson is confident that the Gunners will pick up three points against the Hammers to remain ahead of Burnley in the race to finish in sixth place and in the final Europa League spot.

“I would expect Arsenal to win this,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“There’s the prospect of Burnley finishing above Arsenal – no disrespect but if you’re Arsenal you don’t want to be finishing a 38-game season behind Burnley. Not in this day and age – maybe in the 1920s!

“You can understand finishing below the top five, but not Burnley.”

Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons before a 4-2 loss to Championship side Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the third round back in January.

The Gunners have beaten AC Milan and CSKA Moscow in the previous two rounds of the Europa League.
