Charlie Nicholas is backing Bayern Munich to take a big step towards reaching the Champions League final by beating Real Madrid 3-1 in their semi-final first leg on Wednesday night.

The German side head into the crunch last four clash after having booked their place in the semi-finals thanks to victory over Sevilla over two legs in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they claimed a dramatic win over Juventus to seal their spot in the last four.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are chasing their third successive Champions League title as the Spanish giants look to make history by winning the trophy for the third year in a row.

However, former Arsenal man Nicholas feels that Bayern are likely to take the advantage into the return leg at the Bernabeu next week.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Nicholas said: How can you really go against Real Madrid? They’re the first team to win back-to-back titles and always have a chance with Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals.

“However, I just feel Bayern have started to click. I’ve just got a fancy for them to go on and win this tournament, with Jupp Heynkes repeating his feat of completing the treble before walking away.

“The players are just so comfortable in their skins under this man and for some of them, it will be a fond farewell.

“I see Robert Lewandowski leaving in the summer and time is perhaps up on Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who will all be eager to go out on a high.”

Real Madrid beat Juventus in the final last season in Cardiff to become the first team to win the Champions League trophy for two years running.

The winner of the semi-final tie will take on either Liverpool FC or AS Roma in the final in Kiev next month.
