Antonio Conte warned about Chelsea FC headache
The Spurs legend believes Olivier Giroud's form is providing Chelsea FC boss Antonio Conte with a headache
Antonio Conte is facing a dilemma whether to start Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata in his Chelsea FC team, Garth Crooks says.
The defending Premier League champions signed Morata in a club record £65m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid last summer.
The Spanish forward scored nine times in his opening eight games but has struggled to find consistent form over the past few months.
Indeed, Morata has netted 11 goals and six assists in 27 appearances in the Premier League in the current campaign.
Giroud scored twice following his second-half introduction at St Mary’s to help Chelsea FC secure a 3-2 comeback win.
The France star continued his goal-scoring run with a brilliant opener at Wembley on Sunday before Morata came off the bench to wrap up a 2-0 win over the Saints in the FA Cup semi-final.
The France star moved to Chelsea FC from Arsenal in a £20m deal in the January transfer window.
Former Spurs forward Crooks believes Conte is facing a selection headache with both Giroud and Morata battling it out for a starting spot.
“Chelsea were dead and buried [against Southampton last weekend] before Olivier Giroud came onto the field,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“The Blues were lacking in enthusiasm and drive and looked thoroughly fed up at one stage. But on came the Frenchman for the uninspiring, rather sad-looking Alvaro Morata and turned the game on a sixpence.
“Antonio Conte has an issue now: does he start with Morata in the future and leave Giroud on the bench? Nice problem to have.”
Giroud has scored three goals and has made one assist in eight appearances in all competitions since his move to Chelsea FC earlier this year.
