The Blues have struggled to product consistent form in the Premier League this season in what is Antonio Conte’s second season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The west London club won the Premier League title in style last term but they have struggled to recreate that form this term following their return to the Champions League.
Chelsea FC suffered a damaging blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four this season after they slumped to a disappointing 3-1 loss to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
That result left the Blues in fifth place in the table and facing a considerable uphill struggle if they are to break back into the top four this season.
And former Arsenal star Merson has admitted that he is concerned about the potential implications of the Blues missing out on a top-four finish this term.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, former Gunner Merson said: “These are worrying times for Chelsea. I don’t see any way back for them. I think they’re going to be also-rans again next season.
“Other teams have come flying past them and will only get stronger. Tottenham and Liverpool are already ahead of them.
“Manchester United will spend big again. I don’t see City dropping out of the top four either, so Chelsea could be out of the Champions League for years to come in my opinion – just like Arsenal.”
Chelsea FC will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon when they take on West Ham United at Stamford Bridge.
