Antonio Conte has talked up the importance of Andreas Christensen for his Chelsea FC team.

The Danish defender has broken into the first team at Stamford Bridge this season after having returned from a two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer last year.

Christensen has earned plenty of praise for his strong performances for the Blues under Conte and he was rewarded with a new and improved contract at the start of this year.

The 22-year-old centre-half has made 24 Premier League appearances for the west London side and has been demonstrating his potential as a top defender with his performances this term.

And Conte has admitted that he is a big fan of the young centre-half after having given him the chance to impress in the first team this season.

Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday, Conte said: “We are talking about a young player. For him it is the first season playing at this level.

“Playing at this level means you lose a lot of mental energy. It could be that he is a bit tired in this respect. At the same time, to have the possibility to play Gary Cahill is right. We are talking about an important player not only for Chelsea, but also for the national team.

“I have this opportunity to make rotations, especially in the defensive line. When I see some situations, I try to change something.

“For sure Christensen can contribute in the last few weeks of the season. I have four central defenders at the moment. From now until the end I will make rotations and give everyone the possibility to play.”

Chelsea FC are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table and looking as if they are going to miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League this term.

That means that the Blues are likely to have to settle for a place in the Europa League for next season.

Chelsea FC will take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month.
