Antonio Conte has admitted that Danny Drinkwater is having an “unlucky” first season at Chelsea FC following his move from Leicester City last summer.

The England midfielder has endured something of a disappointing and frustrating start to his career at the west London club after having signed from the Foxes on deadline day last summer.

Drinkwater has struggled for both form and fitness and he has found his first-team opportunities to be severely restricted in recent months.

Indeed, the 28-year-old has only started five Premier League games for Chelsea FC so far this season and 12 games in all competitions.

Drinkwater has scored one goal for the Blues and will be hoping to stake his claim for a regular spot in the first team in the closing stages of the campaign.

And Conte has opened up about Drinkwater’s struggles this season following his move to the club from Leicester City last summer.

Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday before Chelsea FC’s trip to Southampton in the Premier League, Conte told reporters: “Danny is having an unlucky season.

“He started this season with a problem in his calf, then he continued to have problems.

“Now he is struggling with a problem in the groin. We are talking about a good midfielder, a good player. I trust him.”

Chelsea FC are still aiming to try and finish the season with a trophy and they will take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley later this month.
