Antonio Conte excited about Chelsea FC strike partnership
Antonio Conte explains why he is has been pleased by Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata's displays for Chelsea FC
Antonio Conte has admitted that he is excited about the potential partnership forming between Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata at Chelsea FC.
Giroud and Morata both started up front for the west London side as Conte’s men secured a 2-1 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Thursday night to keep their faint top-four hopes alive.
The French forward has been challenging Morata for a place in the team at Stamford Bridge since having signed for the Blues from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
Thursday’s game was the first time that the pair had played together from the start for the Blues, and Conte feels that the partnership is showing plenty of promise.
Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday, Conte said: “I was very pleased for the performances of Morata and Giroud.
“It was the first time they have played together and they did very well.
“Before it was not simple for many reasons to try this option, but now I know that I have this option and it’s a possibility to play them both together on Sunday, and in the future.
“Both these players worked so hard in the game, with and without the ball, and that pleased me.
“Our target was to bring more players into the box. Sometimes when we play with one striker and two number 10s, it is harder to get into the areas to cross, because we only have one player in the box.”
Chelsea FC are currently preparing for their crunch FA Cup semi-final showdown against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
The west London side are in fifth place in the Premier League table and five points behind Tottenham Hotspur as they look to catch their local rivals in the race for Champions League qualification.
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title last season but they have struggled to produce consistent form in all competitions in Conte’s second campaign in charge at the club.
