Gary Neville praised Alvaro Morata for a smart finish as he scored the opening goal in Chelsea FC’s 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Easter Sunday.

Morata netted his second goal of 2018 when he headed home Victory Moses’ cross in the 30th minute at Stamford Bridge after Hugo Lloris failed to collect the ball.

However, Tottenham fought back into the game and Christian Eriksen netted a brilliant long-range strike to make it 1-1 at half-time.

Dele Alli then netted twice in four second-half minutes to put Tottenham in control and seriously dent Chelsea’s hopes of sealing a top-four finish this season.

Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville said of Morata’s opener: “It’s a mess from Lloris. I can’t help thinking back to that Morata header that he missed at Wembley earlier on in the season. He didn’t miss this time.

“Willian makes a good run that brings Ben Davies in and Moses then gets the free cross.

‘When the goalkeeper comes for it, he has to make it. He doesn’t and in the end it’s just about Morata and whether he can guide it into the empty net – and he does.”

The result has left Chelsea FC facing a serious uphill battle to try and get back into the Champions League spots before the season is out.

The Blues are now fifth in the table and eight points behind Tottenham with seven games left to play this season.

The west London side will take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month as they look to try and end the campaign with a trophy.
