Juan Mata has praised his Manchester United team-mates for their vital win at Bournemouth to put the Red Devils in pole position to finish in second place in the Premier League table.

Manchester United suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion in their last Premier League game at Old Trafford earlier this month to prompt criticism of Jose Mourinho’s players.

The Red Devils handed Manchester City the Premier League title following their shock loss to the Premier League’s basement club despite a 3-2 win over their derby rivals at The Etihad earlier this month.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes to his team for their mid-week trip to Bournemouth and the move paid dividends after the Red Devils eased to a 2-0 win at the Vitality Stadium.

The Red Devils are in second place and three points ahead of Liverpool FC having played one game less than Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Writing on his personal blog One Hour Behind, Mata was pleased that Manchester United could cement their place in second spot.

“The victory in Bournemouth was important to remain strong in the second spot of the Premier League table. Winning the title must be the goal of Manchester United always but, since we won’t make it this year, we have to keep hold of that second place,” Mata wrote.

Manchester United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in the 2016-17 season following Mourinho’s appointment as Louis van Gaal’s replacement.

The Red Devils signed Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal from Arsenal in January.
