Kenny Cunningham believes Trent Alexander-Arnold repaid Jurgen Klopp’s faith in the defender in Liverpool FC’s 3-0 win over Manchester City.

The England international has been criticised for his defending in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.

Alexander-Arnold made another error in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League last weekend.

The 19-year-old was targeted by Manchester City during the first half as Leroy Sane looked to expose the young right-back.

Alexander-Arnold managed to keep the Germany international quiet in what was a man of the match performance.

Former Irish defender Cunningham believes Klopp deserves credit for placing his faith in the promising Liverpool FC full-back.

“Trent Alexander Arnold was excellent,” Cunningham told Newstalk.

“Klopp showed his confidence in the player. He must have got a huge amount of confidence in that. It could have been easy for him to push Clyne in.

“It’s what Guardiola should have done with Sterling. Klopp got it back in bucket loads from Trent Alexander Arnold.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.

The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

The Merseyside outfit signed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer window.
