Jamie Redknapp believes Virgil van Dijk has proven the difference at Liverpool FC this season.

The Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.

The Merseyside outfit missed out on Van Dijk last summer and the Reds paid the price following their defensive struggles before January.

Van Dijk has helped Liverpool FC to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last 11 games in all competitions.

The Dutch defender helped Liverpool FC to reach the Champions League semi-finals thanks to a 5-1 win against Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Van Dijk marshalled the Reds defence throughout a difficult 90 minutes at The Etihad to earn rave reviews from BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand.

Former Liverpool FC captain Redknapp lavished praise on Van Dijk for his immediate impact at the 18-time English champions.

“Van Dijk makes such a difference to that back four,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “He is so composed. He is so assured.

“That’s what Liverpool have been missing. He is a different class. He makes Liverpool look like a really solid back four.”

Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world following his £75m switch to the Anfield outfit from Southampton.

The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table in Klopp’s first full season in charge at the Merseyside club last term.

Liverpool FC are looking to finish in the Champions League qualification spots in successive seasons.
