Michael Owen is backing Liverpool FC to beat Manchester City in a high-scoring first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Reds will welcome the Premier League leaders to Merseyside looking to secure a positive result ahead of the return leg next week.

Liverpool FC are the only Premier League team that has beaten Manchester City in the English top flight this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were impressive 4-3 winners against the Citizens at Anfield back in February thanks to goals from Emre Can, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool FC booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a 5-0 aggregate win over Portuguese giants FC Porto.

However, Manchester City will take confidence from their 5-0 thrashing of 10-man Liverpool FC at the Etihad back in September.

The Citizens are one win away from winning the Premier League title ahead of the visit of Manchester United in the derby next weekend.

Former Liverpool FC striker Owen is backing the Reds to ease to a narrow win against Manchester City.

“The 179th meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City but the first in European competition and what a wonderful occasion it promises to be,” Owen told BetVictor.

“Liverpool are unbeaten in their 10 previous Champions League games this season and I expect them to take a slender lead back to the Etihad next Tuesday.

“One thing is for sure, City will have a harder game at Anfield than they had on their last visit to Merseyside given Everton’s pale and limp performance at Goodison on Saturday.”

Liverpool FC will also have a small matter of a derby to take care of ahead of next week’s second leg when the Reds face Everton at Anfield on Saturday.
