Xabi Alonso believes Liverpool FC and Manchester City will play out an intense Champions League quarter-final clash next month.

The Reds booked their place in the Champions League last eight thanks to a 5-0 aggregate win over FC Porto in the last 16.

Sadio Mane scored a hat-trick in Liverpool FC’’s 5-0 win in the first leg in Portugal before a goalless draw at Anfield.

Manchester City were 4-0 winners in Basel in their opening leg to all but seal their place in the quarter-final draw.

The Swiss champions were 2-1 winners at The Etihad but Premier League leaders Manchester City progressed 5-2 on aggregate.

Manchester City were 5-0 winners against Liverpool at Eastlands in September, although Sadio Mane’s sending off contributed to the result.

Liverpool FC became the first Premier League team to beat Manchester City this term following a dramatic 4-3 win over the leaders in February.

Former Liverpool FC star Alonso, who was part of the last Reds teams to win the Champions League in 2005, is anticipating an “intense” last-eight clash between the Premier League rivals.

“We can expect an intense game. Both styles are different,” Alonso told ESPN FC.

“Klopp is getting the style he wants. I am really looking forward to watching it.”

Alosno scored Liverpool FC’s equaliser in a 3-3 draw with AC Milan in the Champions League final in 2005 before the Merseyside outfit beat the Italian giants on penalties.

The Spanish midfielder was part of the Liverpool FC team that lost 2-1 to the Serie A side in the Champions League final in 2007.
