Liverpool FC roared into the lead in the 12th minute when the ball fell to Mohamed Salah in the box and the Egyptian drilled home from close range.
The Reds then made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired home a brilliant right-footed strike into the left corner.
And Sadio Mane then headed home Salah’s cross in the 31st minute to cap an incredible opening half hour for the Reds at Anfield.
Salah had to be substituted off with an injury in the second half but the result leaves Liverpool FC firmly in control of the Champions League quarter-final tie ahead of next Tuesday’s second leg at The Etihad.
And reacting to Liverpool FC’s dominant first half display, Lineker wrote on Twitter: “Good heavens. 3-0 to Liverpool. City all over the place. Pep’s getting sacked in the morning.”
Liverpool FC will now turn their attentions towards Premier League affairs and their crunch clash against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.
The Reds are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they seek a top-four finish for next season.
