Paul Merson names the two signings Liverpool FC must make this summer
Paul Merson wants to see Liverpool FC sign a new defender and goalkeeper in the summer transfer window
Paul Merson says Liverpool FC must “at least” sign a new defender and a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window if they want to be able to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Reds have been in decent form in recent weeks and have been earning plenty of praise for their free-flowing attacking displays.
However, Liverpool FC have come up short in the race for the Premier League title this season and they look poised to finish in third place in the table this term.
The Merseyside outfit are hoping to reach the Champions League final this season and will take on AS Roma in the return leg of their semi-final clash in Italy next week.
Attentions will now inevitably start to turn towards the summer transfer window and the signings Jurgen Klopp will look to make to bolster his Liverpool FC squad.
And former Arsenal star Merson believes that Liverpool FC will need to start by strengthening their defence if they want to be able to challenge for the title next term.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “It’s all very well them closing in on the Champions League Final. I always thought that in a one-off game or a cup tie they could beat Manchester City.
“But over a 38-game season? No. They are going to need to spend big money to mount a title challenge.
“Their squad is nowhere near big enough to challenge City. They are at least a goalkeeper and a defender short still.”
Liverpool FC are yet to win their first trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.
