Rio Ferdinand believes that Real Madrid will be the favourites to win the Champions League if they progress to the semi-finals – but admitted that the Spanish giants will not want to face Liverpool FC in the next round.

Liverpool FC secured their spot in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition after a solid 2-1 comeback win against Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Gabriel Jesus gave the Citizens the lead on the night but Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both struck in the second half to secure a 5-1 win on aggregate for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

FC Barcelona were dumped out by AS Roma in their quarter-final tie on Tuesday night, while Real Madrid will host Juventus in the return leg of their tie in Spain with a 3-0 lead on Wednesday night.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reckons that Real Madrid will be the favourites to claim the title for a third straight year if they progress.

But he admitted that no side will want to come up against this in-form Liverpool FC team.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “I wouldn’t want to see Liverpool come out of the hat if it was me playing against them.

“Sitting here now, I think Real Madrid, if they go through, will be favourites based on experience and having Cristiano Ronaldo in their team.

“But, again, they wouldn’t want to be playing against this Liverpool team.”

Liverpool FC will find out their opponents for the semi-final tie when the draw is made on Friday afternoon.
