The Reds booked their place in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in a decade thanks to a brilliant 2-1 comeback win over Manchester City at The Etihad.
After last week’s 3-0 win in the first leg at Anfield, goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the second half at The Etihad secured the Reds’ progress to the last four.
Liverpool FC will now be eagerly anticipating Friday’s Champions League semi-final draw, when the Reds will discover who they will be facing in the last four.
And Reds legend Thompson could not hide his delight at seeing his former team progress through to the semi-finals for the first time in 10 years.
Thompson wrote on Twitter after the game: “One of THE great European results in our history. My goodness that’s why I love my club. Congrats to the boss, his staff and most of all the players who all went above and beyond their duties. YNWA.”
Liverpool FC will now switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their home clash against Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday night.
The Reds are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and book their place in the top four for the second season running under Jurgen Klopp.
