Liverpool FC urged to sign top 29-year-old defender from title rival
Ian Wright tells Liverpool FC to consider a move for Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld
Ian Wright has urged Liverpool FC to consider a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld in the summer.
The Belgium international is facing an uncertain future at the north London outfit following protracted contract negotiations.
Alderweireld appears reluctant to sign a new deal with Spurs to open up the possibility of a transfer at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old has established himself as a top defender during his two and a half seasons at Tottenham.
Alderweireld moved to Spurs from Atletico Madrid in a £12.5m deal in 2015 after Tottenham beat Southampton to his signature.
Liverpool FC made Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world following their £75m deal to sign the defender in January.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes the addition of Alderweireld would give Liverpool FC a great shot at challenging Manchester City next term.
“[Liverpool should sign] someone like Alderweireld,” Wright told Sky Sports. “I don’t know if they’re looking at him. He is somebody who I’d be looking in and around.
“They need to get that quality and confident player in there. They are not a million miles away. Man City will be scared of him.”
Liverpool FC are in the Champions League semi-finals following a thrilling 5-1 win against Manchester City.
The Reds will take on Serie A giants AS Roma in the last four as Liverpool FC look to win their first Champions League crown since 2005.
