Ian Wright urges Liverpool FC to tie down 26-year-old to new deal
The Arsenal legend warns Liverpool FC about the prospect of losing Roberto Firmino in the summer
Ian Wright has urged Liverpool FC to tie down Roberto Firmino to a long-term deal.
The Brazil international scored twice and made two assists in Liverpool FC’s 5-2 win against Serie A giants AS Roma in the second leg of the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The Liverpool FC forward is enjoying his best season at the Anfield outfit since the Reds signed Firmino in a £29m deal from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Firmino has scored 25 goals and has 13 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign to help Liverpool FC reach the last four of the Champions League
According to reports in the British media, Firmino has a €98m contract release clause amid reported interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Liverpool FC need to ensure Firmino’s long-term future is sorted out before the end of the season.
“Ronaldo is the only one with more goals and assists,” Wright told Sky Sports. “He is fantastic. Liverpool need to sign him up for a long time.
“The way he plays in the number nine role, I am not sure who could come in and replicate how he plays. He is the best I have seen at it.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table thanks to part to Firmino’s 15 goals in the English top flight this term.
The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions league after a two-season absence.
