The Premier League leaders endured chastening experience at Anfield on Wednesday night following a 3-0 loss to Liverpool FC in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
The Red Devils will be hoping to heap further misery on their bitter rivals given Manchester City can secure their first Premier League title under Pep Guardiola with a victory on Saturday.
The Citizens were 2-1 winners against Manchester United in the derby meeting at Old Trafford earlier this season thanks to goals from Nicolas Otamendi and David Silva.
Guardiola omitted Raheem Sterling from his starting line-up on Wednesday night despite the England international’s incredible form in the current campaign.
Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson is backing Sterling to fire Manchester City to victory over Manchester United and their first Premier League title under Guardiola.
“Again it will be interesting to see how Pep goes with his team,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“He’s got another six games to win the league so does he need to play his best side? Probably not.
“But I’m still going to a City victory because they have enough, with the response we’re expecting, and I fancy Raheem Sterling, who had a pretty tough night on Wednesday, to fire them to the title.”
Manchester City will host Liverpool FC in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at The Etihad on Tuesday night.
The Citizens haven’t won the Premier League title since 2014, while Manchester City are looking to win the Champions League for the first time.
