Paul Merson believes that the Champions League tie between Liverpool FC and Manchester City remains finely poised – despite the Reds’ lead.

Liverpool FC were in fine form in the first leg at Anfield last week as they claimed a 3-0 win to take a big step towards reaching the semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane recorded an impressive victory for the Merseyside outfit as they dominated the game on Merseyside.

The scoreline means that Liverpool FC know that if they score one goal at The Etihad on Tuesday night in the return leg, it would leave Pep Guardiola’s men having to net five times to secure their progress to the semi-finals.

However, former Arsenal star Merson believes that the tie remains finely poised ahead of the return leg at The Etihad next week.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Even though they won 3-0 they had to work their socks off and it’s a quick turnaround now, for Tuesday, in a tough part of the season.

“If Klopp plays a first-choice team [against Everton], I give City every chance of turning it around.

“He has got to be careful or he will open the door. If Liverpool keep their players fit, they can win the Champions League.”

Liverpool FC are aiming to try and finish in the top four for the second season running under Jurgen Klopp this term.

The Reds booked their place in the Champions League this season after they finished in fourth place under their German manager last term in the Premier League.
