Mark Lawrenson: This proves Man United have been disappointing this season
The Liverpool FC legend discusses Manchester United's Premier League season
Mark Lawrenson has claimed that the fact David De Gea has been Manchester United’s best player this term proves the Red Devils have been disappointing in the 2017-18 season.
The Red Devils signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea FC midfielder Nemanja Matic and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the 2017 summer transfer window.
While Manchester United were able to keep pace with Manchester City in the opening weeks of the season, the Red Devils lost ground on the leaders in November.
Jose Mourinho’s side are sitting in second place but 13 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City with eight games to in the current campaign.
In addition, the Red Devils lost 2-1 to La Liga giants Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 last month despite being handed a relatively kind draw.
Manchester United can still finish the season with silverware if the Red Devils manage to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final.
Both Manchester City and Liverpool FC have scored more goals than Manchester United this term, prompting criticism of Mourinho and his style of management.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes the fact that De Gea is Manchester United’s best player this term highlights the type of season the Red Devils have endured.
“It says a lot about Manchester United’s season that their goalkeeper is their best player,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“United striker Romelu Lukaku has actually done quite well in his first season at Old Trafford, but he is not in the top six for the season.”
