Paul Merson believes Jesse Lingard is developing into a “proper player” at Manchester United.

The England international has enjoyed his best season at Manchester United so far despite increased competition for a starting spot.

Lingard has scored eight goals and made four assists in 27 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The 25-year-old has also netted five goals in eight games in cup competitions to help Manchester United reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

Lingard has managed to retain his place in the Manchester United team despite the addition of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

The Manchester United star has even managed to dislodge Tottenham Hotspur rival Dele Alli from the England team with the winner against the Netherlands last month.

Former Arsenal star Merson has admitted that he has been impressed with Lingard’s dramatic improvement at Old Trafford this season.

“Lingard is turning out to be a proper player,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He gets better every week.”

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 last month.

The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson stood down as manager in 2013.

However, Manchester United are on course for their best finish in five seasons.

The Old Trafford outfit will have to get past Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.
